Student Data Specialist



Location: Education Service Center Region 15

Pay Grade: Based on ESC Region 15 Salary Schedule

Position Purpose:
This position reports to the Data Services Coordinator and works collaboratively with departmental team members to develop and implement strategies that promote operational effectiveness and efficiency. The role requires exercising independent authority in consulting with both internal and external clients, offering expert advice to management, and using discretion and sound judgment in matters of significant importance related to the successful implementation and utilization of departmental initiatives.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Support department coordinators, team members, and clients in organizational procedures related to TSDS, ASCENDER, and associated applications, databases, and documentation.
  • Train and assist LEA personnel in the administration and submission of TSDS data.
  • Guide LEA staff in using ASCENDER software and ensure proper implementation of TSDS and other federal/state mandates.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues reported by clients related to ASCENDER and TSDS.
  • Stay current on software updates and provide training to clients on new functionalities.
  • Communicate TSDS data requirements and collection procedures to contracted LEAs, including PEIMS and Core Collections.
  • Exercise authority to propose and negotiate enhancements to software and database functionality to improve client operations.
  • Apply problem-solving and organizational skills to support accurate, timely student data reporting and ensure compliance with state and federal deadlines.
  • Proactively suggest improvements to enhance team and system effectiveness.
  • Maximize client engagement with TSDS, ASCENDER, and related systems through training, consultation, and strategic implementation support.
  • Offer expert guidance and customer service to both internal and external stakeholders across TSDS, ASCENDER, and related platforms.
  • Facilitate collaboration among ESC, LEAs, TEA, programming staff, and other stakeholders to address reporting issues and clarify regulations.
  • Participate in professional development sessions, meetings, and trainings related to TSDS, MIS, OmniTrack, and TCC to maintain up-to-date knowledge.
  • Maintain certifications in TSDS roles, including Technical Champion, PEIMS Champion, UID Champion, Core Collections Champion, and TIMS Champion.
  • Maintain working knowledge of related systems, such as TREx, SAAH, TEDS, TEAL, Accountability, MIS, and others.
  • Develop and maintain system documentation and technical assistance manuals.
  • Provide consulting and technical support in database management, data conversion, and related areas.
  • Offer support via phone, email, remote tools, and on-site visits to internal and external clients.
  • Use critical thinking to ensure timely, compliant data reporting.
  • Coordinate with internal teams by participating in student data training sessions.
  • Plan and manage events listed on the Data Services Training Calendar.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Data Services Coordinator, Deputy Director, or Executive Director.
Experience:
Three (3) years Texas Student Data Systems (TSDS) collection reporting or acceptable related work experience





Bachelors Degree (Accounting Preferred)
Teaching Certificate, Preferred
