Position Purpose
The Early Head Start Substitute supports the daily operation of the classroom by assisting teachers and providing a safe, nurturing, and engaging learning environment for infants and toddlers. This position ensures continuity of care by substituting for teachers or teacher assistants as needed and follows all Head Start Performance Standards, state licensing requirements, and ESC Region 15 policies and procedures.Primary Responsibilities
- Substitute for classroom teachers or teacher assistants as assigned.
- Assist with implementing daily classroom routines and age-appropriate learning activities under the direction of the classroom teacher.
- Supervise and actively engage children during indoor and outdoor activities to ensure their safety and well-being.
- Build positive, respectful relationships with children and families that support child development and family well-being.
- Use positive guidance techniques to encourage appropriate behavior and foster social-emotional development. Redirect children as needed and maintain a calm, respectful approach at all times.
- Provide routine care, including diapering, toileting, handwashing, meals, and rest time, following approved health and safety procedures.
- Serve as a responsive caregiver by meeting children's individual needs and following teacher guidance regarding lesson plans and routines.
- Assist with meals and snacks, including sitting with children during meals and helping with cleanup.
- Monitor child arrival and dismissal procedures, ensuring children are released only to authorized individuals.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary classroom by cleaning toys, materials, equipment, laundry, and other classroom areas throughout the day.
- Provide basic emergency care as needed and follow all health, safety, and emergency procedures.
- Maintain confidentiality of all child, family, and program information.
- Comply with all ESC Region 15, Early Head Start, and center policies, procedures, and safety regulations.
- Demonstrate professionalism, punctuality, and readiness to work.
- Utilize required technology and participate in ongoing professional growth.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Center Director, Head Start/Early Head Start Director, or Executive Director.
